Spiti vs Ladakh: which high-altitude trip is for you?

Spiti and Ladakh are India's two great cold-desert journeys. They look similar in photos, but the experiences are quite distinct.

Ladakh: grander, more accessible

Bigger lakes, higher passes, a flight straight into Leh and a well-developed tourism setup. Ladakh is the easier of the two to organise and the more dramatic in sheer scale.

Spiti: rawer, quieter, harder to reach

Reached overland through Kinnaur or Manali, Spiti feels more remote and untouched. Villages like Komic and Langza sit among the highest inhabited places on earth, and the monasteries feel lived-in rather than visited.

So which?

Short on time and want the icons? Ladakh. Craving stillness and willing to spend more time on the road? Spiti. Either way, acclimatise properly and travel with a driver who knows the terrain.
